Why the marsh banks are collapsing — and why the culprit is a native species.

The crab that eats the marsh

Walk the edges of the Pamet's salt marsh and you may notice bare, collapsing banks where thick green cordgrass used to grow. Scientists call it salt marsh dieback, and here on the outer Cape one of the main culprits lives right underfoot: the purple marsh crab (Sesarma reticulatum).

These crabs graze on cordgrass at night, chewing it down to stubble and honeycombing the peat with their burrows. Cordgrass (Spartina) is the plant that holds the entire marsh together: its roots bind the soil, buffer storms, and build the habitat that fish, shellfish, and shorebirds depend on. When the grass dies, the bank crumbles, peat washes away, and the marsh sinks faster than sea-level rise alone would ever take it.

The Counterintuitive Part

The problem is a native species, and the cause is us

Purple crabs belong here. They have always been part of this marsh. What changed is that their predators no longer reach them. Striped bass are a normal predator of the purple marsh crab — and as tidal flow through the Pamet has degraded, the river's striped bass population has been pushed steadily downstream, toward the harbor and the bay, away from the marsh banks where the crabs graze. Released from that predation, the crabs multiplied and their grazing went from a natural process to a destructive one. According to the Cape Cod National Seashore, this runaway grazing is now the leading cause of marsh loss on the outer Cape — visible in aerial photographs going back to the 1950s.

It is a useful corrective to the instinct that invasive species are always the enemy and native ones are always fine. An ecosystem missing its predators will damage itself. Why it compounds everything else

It accelerates subsidence

The Pamet's marsh east of Route 6 already sits roughly two feet lower than the salt marsh downstream, from a century of sediment starvation and peat compaction. Losing cordgrass to grazing removes the root structure that would otherwise hold elevation — deepening a deficit that restoration will have to overcome.

It undermines storm protection

Marsh is infrastructure. A vegetated marsh absorbs wave energy and storm surge before it reaches roads and houses. A crumbling, unvegetated bank does not.

It removes nursery habitat

Cordgrass beds shelter juvenile fish and shellfish. Their loss propagates straight up the food web that supports the fishery and the birds.

Green crabs partly counteract it

Cape Cod research has found the invasive green crab preys on purple crabs and frightens them off the grass, allowing marsh to recover in places. Two problems that partially cancel — which is exactly why management here has to be evidence-led rather than reflexive. Green crab research →

What we want to fund

Monitoring

Establishing where dieback is active in the Pamet and how fast it is moving. You cannot manage what you have not measured.

Crab-exclusion caging

A well-tested experimental method — fence a plot, exclude the crabs, and watch whether the cordgrass returns. Cheap, and it answers whether grazing is the binding constraint at a given site.

Restoring flow, restoring predators

Reopening tidal flow so striped bass and other predators can work their way back up the river, into the reaches where they historically kept purple crab numbers in balance.

Research partnerships

Working with the National Seashore and regional scientists rather than duplicating their work.
