About Us

Our Story & Mission

How a love for one tidal river became a calling to protect it.

Founding Story

In 2026, we founded Friends of Pamet River. Not as scientists or engineers — as neighbors, as parents, as people who believe that loving a place means you should protect it.

We are building a community of advocates and stewards around the Pamet River — one of Truro's most beautiful and most vulnerable waterways — as well as Truro's pristine Town beaches.

The Pamet needs advocates. What was once a pristine tidal salt waterway, running nearly the full width of the outer Cape, has been dramatically altered over the past 150 years. A 19th-century dike, undersized culverts, and decades of restricted tidal flow have starved the upper river of the saltwater that once sustained its marshes — and the consequences are visible today in choked channels, invasive phragmites, and a system increasingly vulnerable to storms and rising seas. These problems have been studied for four decades. They are well understood. What they need now is a community that insists on solutions.

That is why Friends of Pamet River exists: to be the river's voice. The Town has begun the extensive work required to restore the Pamet to health, and seeing that effort through will take sustained public attention, education, and support. We serve as a resource to help inform our neighbors, promote the restoration, and move it along — and throughout this website you'll find the history, the studies, and the project links that tell the river's full story.

Our stewardship is hands-on, too. Some of our founding members first joined forces on the Truro Advisory Shellfish Committee, and the funds we raise support practical work in and around the water: shellfish seeding, remediation of invasive species, and increasing public access to our waterways and beaches. We welcome any and all ideas that advance the mission — we will serve as a source of funding and promotion for efforts that support, preserve, and celebrate Truro's natural resources.

The river has given us so much. It's time to give something back. Come join us!

About the Pamet River

What We Believe

Three values guide everything we do

Science-Grounded

Every initiative we undertake is anchored in ecological research, water quality data, and partnership with professional conservation scientists. Advocacy without evidence is just noise.

Community-Led

The people who live alongside the Pamet — year-round residents, seasonal visitors, fishermen, kayakers, birders — are the river's greatest asset. We build from the ground up.

Long-Term Thinking

The Pamet has been shaped by 13,000 years of glacial and tidal history. The decisions we make now — about culverts, invasive species, sea level rise — will echo for centuries.
