Invasive Green Crabs

One of the most destructive invaders on the Atlantic coast — and what can actually be done about it.

The Species

Carcinus maenas

The European green crab is one of the most destructive invasive species on the Atlantic coast. It arrived in the 1800s — most likely in the ballast water and hull fouling of ships from Europe — and has spread up the coastline ever since, thriving in exactly the warming, sheltered tidal waters that describe the Pamet.

Green crabs are voracious. A single crab can eat dozens of young clams and oysters in a day. They also shred the roots of eelgrass and salt marsh as they dig, undermining the very habitat that the Pamet's restoration depends on. Where they take hold, native shellfish and grasses collapse.

The Complication

Green crabs are not straightforwardly the villain. Research on Cape Cod has found that they prey on the purple marsh crabs whose runaway grazing is a leading cause of salt marsh dieback here — and that their presence alone can scare purple crabs off the cordgrass, letting marsh recover. Removing green crabs from a marsh where purple crabs are the dominant problem can make things worse. See the purple crab research →

This is why we back science-led, site-specific management rather than blanket eradication. What helps in Pamet Harbor may not be what helps in the upper marsh.

What's being tried

Targeted trapping

Concentrated trapping at known hotspots during peak season. Labour-intensive and needs repeating, but it's the only method with a demonstrated local track record.

Green-crab-to-market

Emerging efforts to turn the catch into a product — stock, broth, soft-shell crab, fertiliser, compost — so that removal pays for some of itself rather than relying purely on grants and volunteers.

Composting the catch

Where there's no market, composting at least returns the nutrients to land use rather than wasting the harvest. It's what the Wellfleet pilot does.

Predator restoration

The longer game: rebuilding populations of the fish and larger crabs that historically kept both green and purple crabs in check. Slow, indirect, and probably the only durable answer.

Case Study

Wellfleet Harbor, 2025

Just up the shore, our neighbours are showing what's possible. A Wellfleet shellfisherman working with the Center for Coastal Studies launched a 2025 pilot that traps green crabs at hotspots including Blackfish Creek and Chipman's Cove, with the catch composted rather than discarded. It's precisely the kind of hands-on, locally-run programme we want to help bring to the Pamet.
